Bio-Psycho-Spiritual Foundations of Self-Realization

Reflections on being an Artist of Possibility and Transdimensional Spirituality
The secret to realization is in the moment. It’s all in the moment. In every moment there is an opportunity awaiting us. An opportunity that expands beyond the conventional mind. An opportunity of unimaginable richness. An opportunity of unimaginable possibility. An opportunity for self-realization - if there is a “self” to be realized. An opportunity for the realization of us all.

And that moment, that perfect moment – which is every moment – with the potential to perpetually unfold beyond time and beyond space, is an embodied moment. It is a moment of potential freedom and it is also a moment of perception. It is a moment of sensory experience. And it is, of course, a moment of biology. Our experience of this gift of the possibilities of being human is as a moment of experience as a biological being. And from the perspective of a living, embodied biological being, it is a moment composed of an infinite number of biological processes that will never be happening in exactly the same way at any moment again in our phenomenal world. It is a moment of uniqueness. It is a moment of creativity. And it is a moment of infinite possibility.

And because we experience the phenomenal world at the most basic human and animal level as embodied biological beings, the way we enter this moment of infinite possibility is through our biology. Through the senses. Through the moment-to-moment experience of the body in the here and now, and from the perspective of the experience of the body as a portal, a vehicle, a chariot, as a potential “transformational apparatus” that can transport us to expanded and trans-dimensional realms.

The body functions as a portal through the medium of the senses. It is a container of creative potential awaiting new forms of manifestation. A container of potential and experience that is larger than what our “small mind” can comprehend. That is larger than what the “small mind” allows the body to identify with.

The “crude” modalities of perception, including the senses of touch, taste, smell, position, hearing, and seeing, metamorphose into gateways to an infinity of sensory experience that is beyond the imagination and experience of the “small mind.”

By resting in the moment, and witnessing the moment from a place of openness, a place where we can witness and survey the capacity for our perception, our discernment expands, and new experiences and realms of perception arise, and new worlds reveal themselves. And these revealed worlds have their own rules and ways of manifestation.

The body has the potential to function as what some call “Big Mind.” Big Mind is the “mind” of expanded consciousness. Big Mind is the mind that embodies the everyday “small mind” along with the source of creation, and all of creation: past, present, and future simultaneously, as well as mind a priori (prior) to and a posteriori (after) creation. It is the mind of dual as well as the non-dual.

What is the relationship of this Big Mind, of this expanded consciousness to the body? The relationship is that the entry to this Big Mind, this expanded consciousness, this consciousness of infinite possibility, is in the moment, and is lived in the moment-to-moment experience of the body, in the moment-to-moment biological experience of the body as a sensing phenomenon. And inherent in this body there is a possibility of expansion. There is a possibility of “wholeness” that is a reflection, an embodiment of all and everything.

There is a possibility of communicating or expressing or being the greater mind, and the tool of contacting this greater mind is through the body, through the senses. It is a tantra of experience.

The secret of this exploration is using the tools of the human senses as entryways, as portals to vast infinite realms of experience. And just as these realms of experience expand infinitely, the realms of the senses can expand infinitely to accommodate and offer glimpses of trans-dimensional worlds through the revealing of senses that we don’t even know we have. The deeper we explore the realm of the senses, the more we explore and expand our capacity for discernment. And the deeper we explore the capacity for discernment, new senses and capacities for experience arise.

The bio-psychological-spiritual foundations of realization lie in the moment-to-moment experience of the self as a tool, as a portal, as a transformational apparatus for experiences that go beyond the ordinary.

When we explore our senses – including touch, proprioception, smell, seeing, hearing, tasting – with the gift of awareness, we open a gateway to the revelation of other senses that we generally never knew we even had. Through paying attention and being present in the moment as experience unfolds, we can be gifted with opportunities to enter other dimensions of experience that were always available to us, but rarely paid attention to or explored. This makes me think of a comment that A. H. Almaas, alias of Hameed Ali, wrote in one of his Diamond Heart series books. He stated, and I paraphrase, that we go in and out of the “enlightened” consciousness throughout the day, but most of the time we are not aware of it. This reflects the point that we have access to many dimensions of consciousness that we rarely if ever experience because we are never taught to experience those aspects. The culture is not interested in those aspects, or more importantly, we never developed the discerning capacity that would enable us to explore these other realms.

Discernment, which is a more generous term than discrimination, is at the foundation of having the capacity to fully experience the phenomenal world, and offers an opportunity to expand the possibilities of experience of the phenomenal world to trans-dimensional realms. Discernment allows us to have a richer understanding of the realm of the senses and can serve as a portal to revealing other sensory and para-sensory experiences, including “extra-sensory perceptions” and trans-dimensional experiences that require expanded capacities of discernment in order to visit and explore.

New tools are needed to navigate these expanded realms, as these realms exist at the edge of our “normal” sensory capacity, and function with different rules than the sensory phenomena necessary to navigate life as a conditioned animal or being as we know it.

When we rest in the moment, and surrender to the meditation that is always happening and available below the surface of our survival patterns, the expanded field appears, with an infinite number of potential dimensions to explore. All we need to do is witness and follow the phenomena that attracts us in the moment. It is like laying down in an open field on a sunny day, and resting quietly while observing the clouds that pass by. When we become interested and are drawn to a particular cloud, and continue to observe and follow it as it morphs into shapes and phantasms that we could never have dreamed of.

It is from this orientation that we can enter the journey that allows us to unfold as “Artists of Possibility.”
