Spiritual Practice for the Contemporary World
Issue: 23 | September 15, 2025
From the Editors

In this issue we explore spiritual practice for the contemporary world. In an era shaped by rapid change, persistent distraction, and deep existential questioning, spiritual practice remains a timeless thread that connects us to something deeper, vaster, and truer than our everyday selves. But what does it mean to practice today? How do ancient teachings translate into a contemporary context—and what kind of transformation do they make possible?

We spoke with three spiritual luminaries who each share their unique path to illuminate how spiritual practice is relevant to the modern world.

Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati shares her remarkable journey from academic success in the West to monastic life in Rishikesh. In a moment of grace on the banks of the Ganga, she experienced a direct and unshakable knowing of her divine nature. In our conversation, she reflects on the power of that moment, the role of psychological healing in spiritual transformation, and the importance of practices that help us break free from the false identities that keep us bound.

Acharya Shunya, a classically trained teacher in a 2,000-year-old Vedic lineage, speaks with depth and clarity about the full path of Vedanta. She explains how the progressive journey through Bhakti, Karma, and Jnana Yoga leads us back to our sovereign self, and why a complete transmission of the Vedic tradition is more essential than ever. With great nuance, she addresses the needs of contemporary seekers while remaining rooted in the timeless truths of Sanatana Dharma.

Jac O’Keefe brings a powerful voice of spiritual maturity and honesty to our pages. She speaks of the courage it takes to keep evolving—even as a teacher—and the necessity of shedding outdated forms when they no longer serve. Her words invite us into a radical relationship with truth, one that lives beyond any fixed method and continually renews itself through direct experience.

In addition to our featured interviews, we have contributions from members of The Mystery School who share about their own spiritual practice, the fruits they have realized, and what it all means to them.

Our featured artist for this issue is Stella Criscuolo, whose lifelong devotion to drawing has opened into a practice of spontaneous, effortless creation.

We hope you enjoy the issue.
